Pissouri Cyprus is an area roughly half way between Limassol and Paphos, close to Aphrodite’s Rock. With dramatic countryside hills and a breaktaking view down to Pissouri bay, this picturesque village perched on a hill overlooking the sea offers a beautiful natural escape for those seeking a relaxing Pissouri Cyprus holiday.Â
Pissouri has a traditional Cyprus village square which naturally is the hub of villas life with its traditional hospitable coffee shop and local tavernas serving up delicacies. There are weekly events such as Cyprus Night complete with traditional Cyprus dancing, music and plenty of good food. Pissouri also boasts a beautiful amphitheatre located high up in the village with panoramic views towards Akrotiri and Limassol and seats up to 800 people.Â
In the local Cypriot dialect, ‘Pissouri’ means ‘very dark’ and so the story goes that the village is so named due to events that happened one very dark night in the village. One version states that 300 saints came to Cyprus from Palestine and arrived in the bay on a dark night, another was that the Holy Fathers met in this area on dark night whilst being persecuted during the post-Christian years. Another more widely accepted theory is that the area was famous during the Byzantine area for producing gum and tar, called ‘pissa’ and thus Pissouri was named after that.Â
POPULATION
Pissouri’s population is estimated to be at around 2000 residents but many of both the Cypriot and expatriate population of Pissouri are highly mobile. Pissouri Cyprus contains 7 main concentrations of population spread across an area of 14,000 square metres. In the summer seasons, the population is boosted to around 10,000 with tourist arrivals in this popular village.Â
BEACH
To the south of the village lies the beautiful Pissouri Bay, a wonderful sandy beach with a selection of friendly hotels, bars, restaurants and local tavernas.Â
The bay starts from the rocky area of Mavrorotsos and is protected by Cape Aspro, so that there are dramatic cliffs along the coast up to Aphrodite’s Rock, resulting in breathtaking scenery of mountain and sea. The area is surrounded by ancient historical sites dating back centuries and all which can be explored with local walking groups.Â
The beach area also offers a selection of restaurants and water sports during the day and a busy nightlife during the summer season.Â
PRODUCE
The main produce of the Pissouri area is the sultana grape, used for both wine and table consumption and olive oil is also produced in the area as well as olives.Â
Due to the warm climate, there are also many varieties of fruit and vegetables grown in the area including oranges, lemons, plums, apricots, peaches and nectarines as well as the ‘black gold’ of Cyprus – the endangered carobs, which were once the major export for this small island.Â
Every July the grape harvest takes place and every autumn the olive harvest which all involve a lot of work and often the help of the whole family.Â
